A clinical nurse manager is in charge of other nurses and support staff in the department or area in which he or she works. They are responsible for budgets, medical records, the evaluation of employees, recruiting and hiring of other employees, and quality management of his or her department.
A clinical nurse manager will need to have good computer skills in order to perform the required duties. Part of the computer skills required include budgeting as well as inputting and overseeing patient medical records via the computer. It’s important that clinical nurse manager have great computer skills as they will need to communicate with employees and create employee schedules.
Clinical nurse managers are responsible for hiring nurses and other support staff. They are responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and checking references for openings in their department. The manager needs to ascertain if the candidate will fit in with the dynamic of the department, and if hired, place the new employee correctly to maximize the efficiency of the employee and the department as a whole.
The supervisory duties of a clinical nurse manager are very important for the efficiency of how well the department runs, as well as for the overall well-being of the patient and the employees themselves. The nursing manager evaluates the employees based upon their job performance, how well they work with patients and how they relate to other nurses and doctors. They also base evaluations on their overall work habits, such as, how busy the employees keep themselves, punctuality, and days missed from work. They must also have the knowledge and skill to give recommendations to those working in his or her department to improve their performance.
Professional development is part of their job duties. This often means that this person learns of changes and improvements in their profession and either train those who work in their department, or arrange for those employees to receive professional development from another source.
Ultimately, the clinical nurse manager is responsible for how the nursing staff operates both medically and how they relate with patients and their families. Often no other single person is more responsible for how the public feels about the nursing staff than the clinical nurse manger. This person has to make certain that everyone under his or her supervision understands the expectations for how people are dealt with.
Education Requirements
Clinical nursing managers must have a Bachelor Science in Nursing (BSN). Individuals who are interested in this position, but are Registered Nurses (RNs), have the opportunity to complete an RN to BSN program. Many RN to BSN programs can be completed online and are accelerated so that students can complete their degree quickly and conveniently.
